The educational opportunities at The Lake District Wildlife Park are endless. From listening to our public Keeper talks to having hands-on animal encounters, there’s always something to learn. But you can enhance your school visit by booking a themed visit such as our popular Out of Africa Day
Out of Africa
Many primary schools study Africa as a topic, learning about the country and improving literacy skills by reading the ‘Meerkat Mail’ storybook, culminating in a visit to the Lake District Wildlife Park.
During their visit, children have the opportunity to talk to the keepers about the different Africa animals. They get up close and personal during the Reptile Encounter, where they have chance to touch the Royal Python, pat Margaret the Giant Tortoise and maybe even stroke her tiny baby.
All the birds taking part in the Bird of Prey Flying display on an Out of Africa day are from Africa, with John
the Falconer giving commentary on birds such as the Tawny Eagle, the Lanner Falcon and the Black Kite.
At the top end of the park are more African species including a herd of Grants Zebra –the zebra stripe jeep is a hit with many schools for viewing and photographs.
The most magical part of the day for many pupils is the chance to learn more about the Meerkats. The inquisitive creatures come right up to the clear viewing window, giving the children an eye to eye view of their favourite African species as well as chance to tip Meal worm treats into their enclosure.
We’re keen to encourage more schools to link topics to a school summer visit, and are currently re-invigorating our school offer. This year we will be linking to the International Year of Sustainable Tourism where our focus will be on Madagascar and ‘Learning thru’ lemurs.’ Why not give us a call to find out more.
How do I make a booking?
