Since the end of August when the young  Grants Zebra was born at the Lake District Wildlife Park near Keswick, there has been much speculation –(and many suggestions), as to the best name for him. At last, the park can reveal he is to be named Sonny.

The foal was born in the last couple of weeks of the summer holidays and attracted a great deal of attention form the press – including an appearance on ITV Border News and discussions on social media. The appeal for a name revealed an array of names including Colin, Sammy, Zidane, Zebby and Spot. But it was a BBC Radio Cumbria broadcast that led 8 year old ‘James’ to choose the name Sonny.

Park Manager Richard Robinson said “We had quite a lot of names, some with very emotional attachments for people, so we thought the best thing was to let the keepers vote from the full list. They chose Sonny because it he was born on a sunny day – unlike his yearling brother ‘Storm’ who arrived during a thunder storm. Choosing the right name is always subjective, but Sonny is very positive – and we hope he has a bright future – his Mum Zara Is certainly looking after him well.”
