Exciting news – Two White Tailed Eagles have landed at the Lake District Wildlife Park. The majestic pair are siblings and came from the Welsh Mountain Zoo. White Tailed Eagles are Britain’s largest native Bird of Prey and so are very impressive. Whilst they are still widely distributed across Eurasia, they are Amber listed in the UK. They were once widespread in Britain, but they declined due to persecution and a reduction in suitable habitat. They have been successfully reintroduced to Scotland and the Isle of Wight as well as Ireland.
When the birds have reached maturity, they will be playing a vital role in the EEP (European Endangered Species Programme) and are linked to the future reintroduction of White Tailed Eagles in Cumbria. The Cumbrian project is being led by the Lifescapes Project.
Richard Robinson Park Manager says “we are delighted to finally welcome these magnificent birds to the Park as part of an important project for the reintroduction of the White Tailed Eagle. A huge amount of work has gone on behind the scenes to complete the construction of their aviary. Every detail from choosing the correct netting and installing the huge timber poles has been a huge task. We hope that they will settle in soon and we wholeheartedly support the projects to conserve and reintroduce these birds to further areas of the UK.”
If you are heading to the Park please do ask Richard or our Bird Keeper Michaela to tell you more about these magnificent birds.
